YouTube to MP4 converter
MP4 is the most compatible video format: it opens on phones, computers, TVs and in editing software. The file arrives as a ready MP4 with sound — no conversion needed.

Why MP4 is the practical format
MP4 is a container holding a video track (usually H.264) and audio (usually AAC). Practically every device of the last fifteen years understands that combination, so the file just opens on a double-click.
On YouTube, high-resolution video is stored separately from audio. The server downloads both tracks and muxes them into one MP4, so you get a normal file with sound instead of a silent video.
The alternative WebM container with VP9 or AV1 is smaller but far less compatible: older TVs, car players and some editors do not read it. That is why MP4 is the default here.
Never rename the extension by hand — it is unnecessary and harmful. The MP4 arrives ready; if a specific device needs another container, use a converter after downloading.
What MP4 gives you
Phone, tablet, laptop, TV, console, USB car stereo — nearly everything plays MP4.
One file rather than separate tracks: nothing to mux or synchronise yourself.
H.264 compresses well, keeping files compact at good quality.
Imports into popular video editors with no preliminary conversion.
MP4 versus other formats
MP4 versus WebM: WebM is more efficient in size but noticeably less compatible. For a TV, an older tablet or a car, MP4 is the safer choice.
MP4 versus MP3: MP4 carries picture and sound, MP3 only sound. If you do not need the video, MP3 saves both space and data.
Size depends on resolution and length: ten minutes at 720p is typically tens of megabytes, the same at 4K several times more. Match the resolution to the screen you will watch on.
